Host / MC / Dog Trivia Master
After his unceremonious firing from the NFL in 2011 for being “too soft” on the players, Dan decided to set his referee sights a little lower. Like 4 ft lower.
8 years later, as the only human on a field of adorable adoptable animals, being the Puppybowl Ref has become a full-time job for Dan Schachner. The last Puppybowl XV airing was a huge success, as Dan flew to Puerto Rico to scout new talent for this bowl and came home with Bella the foster pup, who went on to achieve football greatness.
Yes, The Ref’s been pooped-on, peed-on, and every other thing you imagine a dog might do. While pups may not respect his authority on the field, humans respect his authority as master of Dog Trivia.
Dan’s appeared on the Today Show to quiz Hoda and Kathy Lee on their canine knowledge, and every week he writes and hosts a “Dog Trivia Night” at NYC’s only dog-friendly cafe “Boris and Horton,” with all proceeds going to local shelters.
A long time advocate for dog rescue and dog fostering, Dan continues to provide a stop for pups who are crowded out of the shelters but still in need of a forever home. Using social media to get the word out, he is happy to report that animal adoptions nationwide are steadily increasing. Continuing his work on behalf of animal shelters, Dan was named an ambassador for The Sato Project, which rescues abandoned dogs in Puerto Rico. Dan also works with countless other rescue groups around the country and continues to raise funds for their benefit.
He was awarded the 2018 “Animal Welfare Hero” award from the Baltimore Humane Society.
He’s partnered in the past with Stella and Chewy’s, Petco and Xfinity to promote pet adoption.
